Absrtract art by Janet Jaffke

I am still continuing my quick studies and this time have focused on balancing out both busy areas and quiet areas in the same piece. It was really fun to consider what makes an area visually dense.

These are some basic elements:

  • High value contrast
  • Bright color next to neutral color
  • Active marks
  • Small elements next to larger elements

To keep interest in quiet space  here are some elements I could include:

  • Low color contrast
  • Low value contrast
  • Layering lightly with white or neutral colors

I found this exercise to be very interesting and useful. Often times when I am working on a piece I find there is too much going on and I lose focus. I think I have sharpened the skills to create some more quiet areas and I’d really like to incorporate this into future work.
