About this Gallery

The captured series was my response to a open call for an exhibition through the Miniartextil organization based in Como Italy.

The exhibition was searching for works that addressed 3 criteria:

  • Size of 20cm x 20cm x 20cm
  • Respond to the theme “Pop Up”
  • Incorporate the use of fiber and textiles

I worked on several pieces to explore my options. It was only upon completion of the series that I realized that the oppression of free speech  and civil liberties had been creeping into this work.

All pieces are acrylic mixed media on wood panel.

  • Reflect the ideas of being trapped or contained
  • A prison can take many forms, prisoner to speech, personal thoughts, fears and beliefs as well as rules and norms of society
  • Following 8 images  – free exploration of transparency, form, and use of tissue and fabric
  • In the end, there is hope to break free of whatever holds us captive by our own choices
