Sketchbooks have always been a wonderful tool for me. It’s an open and safe place for me to try anything. I have no judgment, no commitments, no huge investment in materials or time. It’s the perfect place for random ideas to stream onto the page or to try a new mixture of materials, colors, or techniques just for fun. It’s the place where I feel like I can act like a kid again.
Aside from the fun aspect of working in my sketchbook, it has been a valuable tool for me to discover new directions in my work. The freedom of working in my sketchbook allows bits and pieces of information that inform my work. I can make discoveries that might not otherwise show up when I am using more critical thinking during the creation of a larger piece. It’s also a wonderful visual history of my own creative process.
This gallery includes some of the random pages that have appeared in my sketchbook over time.
